After a month long festival of football the FIFA World Cup 2018 finally draws to a close in Moscow on Sunday, with 1998 World Cup winners France taking on a Croatia side who are making their first ever appearance in the final.

France were always expected to make a deep run at this tournament, and it’s no surprise given the breadth of talent at their disposal. They have world class talent from back to front, and while they haven’t been as dazzling as many had hoped for, they have certainly shown that they know how to win.

That’s precisely what they did in their semi-final against Belgium. Samuel Umtiti was the unlikely hero as he flicked a header goalwards from a corner, and from that moment on the French set out to shut Belgium’s creativity down. Eden Hazard had a few promising moments, but in general the blue wall crowded the Belgian attackers out of the game and stifled their chances. When they did break through, Hugo Lloris was always on hand to stop an equaliser.

France fully deserved that 1-0 victory, and after doing the same in their 2-0 win over Uruguay in the quarter finals they will be well drilled in the defensive areas of the game. This is something that will seriously harm Croatia’s chances.

Croatia’s golden age is coming to an end, but Luka Modric has been determined to drive his nation to success in what is likely to be his final World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder has been a leader for Croatia, and he showed exactly why he is so good on Wednesday as he picked his side up in the second half.

They went a goal behind early on to England, but they weathered the rest of the first half storm and came out with renewed vigour after the break. They controlled the game and fully deserved Ivan Perisic’s equaliser, and despite having played two consecutive extra-time matches they battled on in extra-time. Eventually Mario Mandzukic seized a chance from a dreadful defensive lapse in concentration to score the winner and send Croatia through to their first ever World Cup Final.

France are a wholly different outfit to England though. England panicked in the second half and let Modric and company control the game, but France aren’t going to give them such an easy ride. They were excellent in closing down Belgium any time they got near the penalty area, and we can see them shutting Croatia out too.

Ivan Strinic was absolutely terrorised by Raheem Sterling in the first half against England too, and while the Manchester City man couldn’t find the end product, there is a man in France’s squad who regularly does just that. Kylian Mbappe will be up against Strinic, and if the Croatian defender plays as poorly as he did against Sterling, we can definitely see Mbappe getting on the score-sheet.

As far as the overall game goes we can see it being an edgy one, as it regularly is in the final. In the end we don’t expect France to make the same mistakes as England did though, and backing them to get the win in normal time looks a good choice along with a 2-0 correct score predictions.
